Imagine this: you're in a busy shopping mall when someone collapses nearby. Every heartbeat matters. Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) quickly and correctly can be the difference between life and death.
AEDs are now a common sight in places like airports, gyms, offices, and schools—and for good reason. When sudden cardiac arrest strikes, time is critical. AEDs help restore a normal heart rhythm and are most effective when used within the first few minutes. This fast response is a key part of the Chain of Survival—a proven process for improving survival rates in emergencies.
Is the scene #safe? Can you call for help?
Ensure your #safety first. Then call 911 immediately and ask someone nearby to bring the AED.
Should you start CPR right away?
Yes. Begin chest compressions at 100–120 per minute. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until the AED arrives.
How do you use the AED?
Turn it on and follow the voice instructions. Apply the electrode pads to the person’s bare chest—one on the upper right, the other on the lower left.
When does the AED deliver a shock?
The AED will analyze the heart rhythm and tell you whether a shock is needed. If it is, make sure no one is touching the person and press the shock button when prompted.
What happens after the shock?
Resume CPR immediately. Keep going until #emergency responders arrive or the person shows signs of life.
Let the AED guide you—it’s designed for use by untrained bystanders.
Do not touch the victim while the AED is analyzing or delivering a shock.
If the person begins breathing or regains consciousness, roll them onto their side and stay close until EMS arrives.
